Report to: Hoisting & Technical Services Manager, Fortis Mining Engineering & Manufacturing

 

Objective and Scope:

The Engineering Manager is responsible for leading and overseeing the Engineering and Drafting team to deliver innovative, safe, and efficient solutions for Fortis Mining Engineering & Manufacturing Inc. This leadership-focused role blends strategic oversight, people management, and operational excellence to align departmental performance with company objectives. The Engineering Manager fosters a collaborative, high-performance culture, supports professional development, and ensures all work meets the highest standards of quality, safety, and regulatory compliance.

 

Responsibilities:

Team Leadership and Development

·      Provide clear direction and leadership to the Engineering and Drafting team, setting expectations and ensuring alignment with company priorities.

·      Actively promote technical excellence, best practices, and a culture of continuous learning across the department.

·      Monitor workloads and redistribute resources as needed to maintain efficiency and meet deadlines.

·      Support career development by creating and maintaining professional development plans for each team member.

·      Facilitate training opportunities, knowledge-sharing sessions, and cross-functional collaboration.

People Management and Mentorship

·      Build and maintain a positive, respectful, and team-focused environment where people feel valued and engaged.

·      Recruit and onboard high-quality engineering talent who align with company values and culture.

·      Provide consistent and constructive feedback through regular check-ins and annual performance reviews.

·      Recognize and celebrate individual and team achievements.

·      Address performance issues promptly and fairly, offering coaching and guidance to support improvement.

·      Encourage innovation, collaboration, and open communication across all levels of the team.

Engineering and Technical Oversight

·      Supervise drafting and 3D modeling work in SolidWorks and AutoCAD, ensuring accuracy and adherence to standards.

·      Review, verify, and approve engineering designs, mechanical stress analyses, and hand calculations.

·      Ensure all engineering activities meet applicable codes, safety regulations, and company policies.

·      Guide the testing and certification processes for components, systems, and attachments.

·      Conduct or delegate site visits to gather design information and ensure field conditions match project plans.

·      Collaborate with clients, project managers, and other departments to troubleshoot issues and explore alternative solutions.

·      Prepare and review quotes for engineering and drafting projects, ensuring accuracy and feasibility.

·      Be willing and able to travel for site visits, client meetings, and industry events as required.

Quality Assurance

·      Implement and maintain quality control measures to ensure engineering outputs meet or exceed expectations.

·      Double-check drawings, material lists, and supporting documentation for accuracy and completeness.

·      Establish and maintain proper version control for all documents and drawings.

·      Ensure all records are organized, accessible, and compliant with standards.

·      Review feedback from clients and team members to identify areas of quality improvement.

Policies, Processes, and Continuous Improvement

·      Develop, document, and maintain policies, procedures, and engineering standards.

·      Oversee the creation and upkeep of a shared engineering knowledge base and template library for common jobs.

·      Promote consistent application of department procedures to ensure efficiency and uniformity.

·      Continuously assess processes for opportunities to reduce costs, shorten timelines, and improve quality.

·      Support cross-company collaboration to share best practices and align systems across the Northern Strands Group of Companies.

 

Requirements:

Education and Experience

·      Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Civil (Structural) Engineering.

·      Professional Engineer designation (APEGS).

·      15+ years of industry experience, with a minimum of 5 years in a leadership role.

·      Proven track record of leading high-performing engineering teams in industrial, mining, manufacturing, or construction environments.

·      Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

·      Familiar with or previous exposure to SolidWorks and AutoCAD.

·      Experience developing and managing departmental budgets, schedules, and quality standards.

·      Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel periodically.
